I don’t know about you, but I love a good ‘before and after’! There’s something magical about watching the ordinary become extraordinary. Whether it’s people, places, or things, the process of transforming into something better energizes me.
Long before I ever renovated a home or redesigned a process at work, I was the kid glued to the TV when it was time for Lynda Carter as, Diana Prince, to spin into her power as Wonder Woman. There was something about that moment, the becoming, that captivated me. Even then, I was drawn to the idea that a person could transform into a fuller, truer version of self. That early curiosity of ‘what if?’ never left me.
Growing Up Watching the Power of Transformation
As a kid, a show like *Wonder Woman* was an early lesson in becoming more than you would ever think was possible when you step into your true power. Was the show fantasy? Yes, but Diana’s iconic spin into Wonder Woman fueled my fascination with what’s possible, in real life, when someone steps into their potential. I’m grateful for that story. It showed me that we all have potential for something greater, and that sometimes we may need to make a few changes in order to live up to it.

That theme has followed me into adulthood. I’ve always had an eye for potential – the “what if it could be better, more useful, more beautiful?” This applies to people, things, environments, ideas. In my corporate life, it shows up in the cross‑functional networks I build, the smarter processes I design, and the way I naturally coach others to stretch into their full capability. And also in how much I love a good ‘before and after’ series.
Finding Beauty in the “Before”
Furniture, landscaping, home projects, you name it, for me there’s a thrill in spotting the potential in things and transforming them into something more beautiful, functional, or meaningful.
That’s why I love thrifting and marketplace is the only reason I am still on Facebook 🙂 . I’m not the person hunting for the perfectly refinished piece; I’m looking for the one with potential , the item that others have passed by for whatever reason. Yet here it is in front of me, and now I have the privilege as an integral part of the creative and transformative process to help it become something with purpose once again.

My Biggest Transformation Project Yet: A Comprehensive House Exterior Glow‑Up
Now, I’m working on my largest transformation project yet: a full exterior renovation of our home. Here’s what’s ahead:
– New windows, doors, roof, and siding
– A portico to elevate the front entrance
– Converting the side porch into a cozy three‑season room
– Covering the brick on the main house with stucco and manufactured stone
– Lime washing two protected brick walls for a soft, timeless finish

Anticipation Meets Nerves
Will covering the brick spark debate? Probably. But this project is also about something deeper for me: learning to trust my own vision and decisions. For years, I’ve been the one who sees potential in others. I cheer them on and do what I can to help them grow, while encouraging them to imagine what’s possible.
Trusting myself in that same way hasn’t always come as easily. I’ve spent a long time second‑guessing my decisions, especially when they go against the grain or invite debate.
The reality is that ‘as is’ the house is cute – it has good curb appeal but many parts of it are crumbing – the concrete, the windows, etc. If you have an old house, you know. The brick on our house isn’t particularly unique or special, and painting it, which was my original idea, would have created long‑term maintenance issues. Lime washing two of the walls in the back, that are protected from the elements, will give us the aesthetic we want without compromising the material. And covering the front and sides with stucco and stone won’t harm the brick. It will actually improve energy efficiency, which is a welcome bonus.
But beyond the practicalities, I wanted this renovation to include truly transformative elements. That’s where the energy is for me. That’s where the magic lives.
Working with designers and contractors who bring decades of experience has quietly challenged me to step into a new kind of confidence, and to stand firmly in what I imagine for this home, to honor what I feel, and to trust that my choices are worthy. I mean, here I am paying a significant amount of money for the project and yet during the planning I found myself nervous at times to truly express what I wanted…but I did it anyway. And you know what, they could not have been more collaborative. Genuinely listening to me and considering my feelings about the overall aesthetic I am trying to achieve. If this is you – find a builder you can trust. They should be excited about your project. They should be collaborative. They should be willing to steer you in the right direction if your choices will not work from a technical or budget aspect and be flexible in finding alternate solutions. And if you don’t find them right away – keep looking. Don’t settle.
I also know that the overall construction is in the right hands – with collaborative, skilled craftsmen, artists in their own right, who also happen to be just as energized and excited about this project as I am.
A Sneak Peak Into the Exterior Design Aesthetic
For me, the goal of this ‘glow up’ is not about curb appeal. I have spent lots of time thinking about how we want to feel when we are home. And how our home is a reflection of us. I’ve pulled inspiration from Craftsman bungalows and English cottages to create a space that feels safe, warm, grounded, textured, and deeply cozy.
As a result, I’m calling the design “Craftsman Cottage” because the structure and lines are Craftsman and the atmosphere is Modern English Cottage. The color palette and textures lean soft, warm, and natural. I will talk more about why I think this style combination works in another post.

We have been saving, planning, and imaging for two years and now the project kicks off in a couple of weeks! While I have been so excited to share, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous about how the stucco‑over‑brick choice will be perceived. Still, I’m sharing anyway…for those who understand the joy of imagining what’s possible and doing what it takes to bring that vision to life.
